Lab Experiment (formerly known as The Lab Partners) which consists of multi-instrumentalist/producer, The LMNtlyst and lyricist/percussionist, Phantom Channel were in the midst of recording the follow-up to their debut self-titled album when they were forced to rebrand themselves due to legalities. Taking the inevitable name change as a sign from the Universe, the duo chose to shelf the project altogether allowing it to age like fine wine only to pop the cork when the time was right. Fast forward five years, that time is now and “Variable” is born.
A “not-quite” instrumental album, “Variable” is somewhere in between a live beat tape and a full-blown production. There are no samples here, only live instrumentation sprinkled with bits of vocal fortification provided by various lyricists. Also lending his hand to the experiment helping to up the ante in the form of added percussion is Victor DeLorenzo of the Violent Femmes.
The end result is a free-form extravaganza of subtle nuance and brash overtone that has more than stood the test of time.
